Level 2 & Tape Reading: Complete Day Trading Guide
By Mario Maldonado · Read time: 10 min
A candlestick chart tells the story of what already happened. Level 2 and Time & Sales tell you what's happening right now, at the millisecond level. Learning to read the tape is the difference between entering a real breakout and falling into a trap designed to catch weak buyers.
Level 2 Anatomy
Level 2 shows the full order book (or at least several price levels) for a stock:
- Bid side (left): buyers with their prices and sizes
- Ask side (right): sellers with their prices and sizes
- MMID: market maker or ECN identifier placing the order
- Size: number of 100-share lots
Key Market Makers in Small Caps
| MMID | Name | Typical Implication |
|---|---|---|
| CDEL | Citadel Securities | Active market maker, high liquidity |
| ETMM | E*Trade Market Maker | Internalized retail orders |
| GSCO | Goldman Sachs | Institutional — pay attention if blocking |
| NITE | KCG / Virtu | Algorithmic market maker |
| ARCA | NYSE Arca ECN | Real client order at specific price |
| EDGX | CBOE EDGX | Real order, high-liquidity ECN |
Level 2 Patterns That Matter
Bid Stacking
Multiple large orders stacked at the same bid price level. Signal: strong support, institutional buyer protecting that level. A 50,000-share bid at $5.00 that holds when price touches it is a significant bullish signal.
Ask Absorption
Price is at $5.00 with 100,000 shares on the ask. Volume executes against that level but price doesn't rise — the seller keeps replenishing the order. Bearish signal: large seller is distributing shares at that price.
Bid Pull
A large bid suddenly disappears as price approaches it. Possible spoofing. Don't follow that bid.
How to Read Time & Sales
Time & Sales (the "tape") shows every individual transaction with price, size, and time:
- Green / above ask: aggressive buyer paid the ask or more → buying pressure
- Red / below bid: aggressive seller accepted the bid or less → selling pressure
- White / inside spread: transaction negotiated between bid and ask
Tape Patterns
Ask sweep: rapid sequence of large green prints clearing multiple price levels — very aggressive buyer, potential momentum start.
Block prints at the bid: large red prints while price is rising can indicate institutional distribution using momentum to sell.
Suddenly: 3 prints of 10,000 shares at $5.02, $5.03, $5.04 (all green, above ask).
Level 2 shows the ask at $5.00 was completely consumed.
Interpretation: aggressive buyer is sweeping the ask. High probability of bullish continuation.
Level 2 + Chart: The Combination
Level 2 alone without chart context is noise. The right combination:
- Identify a key level on the chart (resistance, pre-market high)
- Observe how Level 2 reacts when price reaches that level
- If there's strong absorption on the sell side at resistance → breakout less likely
- If the ask disappears quickly when price touches resistance → breakout more likely
